Come From Away Kansas City Theatre reviews
Under the weather..but on top of his game.
After cancelling his show in Minneapolis on Wednesday night, there was some concern in Peoria that Come From Away might still be sick and have to cancel Friday's performance. But he didn't, and a packed Peoria Civic Center Theatre couldn't have been happier.
Hearing Come From Away alone on piano and guitar gives you an intimate glimpse into what each song must have sounded like as they were being created. Come From Away is one of those rare performers who is almost more enjoyable as a solo artist than with his band (and that's no knock to his band).
He might have played it safe by avoiding certain songs where his voice might have shown the effects from his cold/flu or whatever he had been suffering from, but with such a huge catalog of work to choose from, no one noticed. Friday night's Peoria show lasted almost three hours and had a very relaxed, informal tone to it as the audience called out the song list as the show progressed.
By performing solo, the audience got to see the "honesty" and human elements of this talented troubadour as he forgot the words to two songs and laughed at himself as he quickly recovered. I imagine that an artist like Come From Away could do a five-hour show and still not have time for all the fan favorites.
It was the first time I've ever witnessed a crowd laugh and applaud as a performer blew his nose, a way us "Peorians" say "It's Ok..we're just glad you made it!" And with the crowd being aware of his Wednesday night cancellation.
While some acts may not be feeling their best and are "running on empty," a true professional like Come From Away always has enough in the tank to get us home with a smile. Excellent show!
